The single most important blood test
By Dr S V Bulatov - registered homeopath

Many people have dreamt about a single blood test that can give them a lot of information on the whole body. The dream has come true. The high homocysteine level relates to more than 150 medical conditions. Everybody above 14 or even younger in some cases should have his homocysteine tested. This blood test should be done on fasting. All laboratories in RSA and worldwide will do it. If the homocysteine is below or around 6 you are in super health zone! If it is above 6 you are in different health risk category according to your result. The high homocsteine can be brought below 6 within 3-6 months using specific supplements and following a simple eating plan.

These are some of the diseases that can develop if homocysteine is above 6:

History
It all began with Dr Kilmer McCully discovery in 1968. He was studying children with a rare genetic disorder called "homocystinuria". These children lack certain enzymes which convert the toxic homocysteine into a harmless cystathione. As a result of that they have extremely high levels of homocysteine in the blood >100 and it is excreted through the urine. These children die very young from heart attacks and strokes if not diagnosed and treated.
Dr McCully came to a conclusion that the homocysteine is much more important than cholesterol in building sclerotic plaque in blood vessels.
His findings were not accepted by the medical profession for the next 22 years.

The overwhelming studies of homocysteine worldwide since 1990's have made the medical profession to accept the importance of this toxic substance for the human body.

Biochemistry
The homocysteine is made in the body from the amino acid methionine. When the methylation process in the body is slow the homocysteine level goes up.
Methylation is a biochemical process that happens over a billion times per second in which methyl groups are added to or subtracted from other molecules. In this way the body makes the substances that it needs and breaks down those it doesn't.
When we eat a food containing methionine and this amino acid gets in our cells, a methyl group is taken away, which leaves us with a homocysteine.
In normal conditions body adds a different methyl group back to homocysteine to convert it to a very important substance called S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) which is a natural antidepressant, anti-arthritic and liver protecting agent. It also becomes a methyl donor to help other biochemical processes.
Homocysteine can also be converted to another extremely important substance-glutathione. This the best anti-aging antioxidant and detoxifying agent.
Methylation process is involved in the repair of DNA. If methylation is low the DNA mutates leading us to auto-immune diseases and cancer.
How can we measure our methylation efficiency? The best test is homocysteine ( H ) level. When our H reading is below 6 we are well methylated, our SAMe and glutathione levels are high and we are in super health zone. When our reading is too high our methylation is slow, we are deficient in SAMe and glutathione, various other biochemicals and we are at risk of developing more than 100 diseases!!!
See the figure below:

SAMe
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) - needs TMG and B12
Methyltransferase - needs folic acid, B2, B12, and zinc
Foods - Methionine - Homocysteine
Cystathione beta synthase - needs B2, B6 and zinc
Cystathionine lyase - needs B2, B6 and zinc

Glutathione
If our methylation is fast only small amounts of homocysteine accumulate. Great majority is immediately methylated and used in various biochemical pathways.
The enzymes that are necessary for all these conversions need normal amounts of all their co-factors ( vitamin B2, B6, B12, folic acid, zinc and TMG ) in order to work efficiently. If any of the co-factors is deficient then the process slows down and homocysteine goes up.
10 - 15% OF ALL PEOPLE HAVE A GENETIC DEFICIENCY OF MTHFR!!! They have high homocysteine levels. This can be corrected with supplying the co-factors in abundance.
PLEASE, NOTE THAT HIGH HOMOCYSTEINE IN EARLY STAGES IS SYMPTOM-FREE!!! The silent damage though has been done already!
When we lower our homocysteine we have the following benefits:
1. Decreased speed of aging
2. Decreased arterial damage
3. Strong immune system
4. Improved brain function and IQ
5. Decreased incidence of pain, inflammation and blood clotting
6. Decreased risk of cancer and intoxication
7. Balanced hormones
8. Better storage of B vitamins
9. Abundant amounts of SAMe and glutathione
The current reference for normal homocysteine level in RSA is 4.5 - 15. This is not in line with the latest scientific research.
Homocysteine is high all over the world independently from race, gender and age. Israelis and Australian Aborigenese have the highest levels as population.
Our homocysteine level shows our level of health. Find out whether your level exposes you to a significant health risk.

The H - factor general eating plan and supplements

  1. Stop the fatty meat. Have more fish and vegetables
  2. Have 2 salads a day and 2 - 3 servings of fruit
  3. Have a clove of garlic a day or a garlic supplement. If you find the smell offensive mix the garlic with lemon juice, olive oil and fresh herbs like parsley, dill, basil, etc. Some people have intolerance to garlic for various reasons. Do not take it then. Just follow the rest of the eating plan.
  4. Do not add salt to your food
  5. Stop tea, coffee, coke, decaffeinated coffee
  6. Stop drinking alcohol
  7. Stop smoking
  8. Reduce your stress
  9. Correct estrogen deficiency - use natural alternatives, not HRT
  10. Avoid the following medications. They all raise the homocysteine level: methotrexate, fibric acid derivatives, theophylline, corticosteroids, sulphasalazine, phenitoin, Phenobarbital, primidone, cyclosporin, L-dopa, metformin, cholestyramine, protease inhibitors.
The following are derivatives of the above: glucophage, methoblastin, solphyllex, theophen comp, salazopyrin, epanutin, garoin, mysoline, norstan, carbilev, madopar, sinemet, dextrin, prednisone, betanoid, capsoid, celestamine, celestone, cortagen, covocort, decadron, decasone, depo-medrol, diprosone, florinef, inframed, hydrocortisone, lenasone, lenisolone, medrol, meticortelone, meticorten, oradexon, panafcort, predeltilone, predeltin, prelone, pulmison, solu-cortef, solu-medrol, steromien, abitrexate, emthexate, atromid, lipafen, lipsin, lopid, bezafibrate, questran, detophlegm, diatussin, dilinet, metaxol, nethaprin expectorant, aerobec, benzebeclate, becloforte, becodises, becotide, budeflam, clenil, flixotide, inflamide, pulmicort, ventizone, viarox, beconase, betnesol, nasacor, rhinocort, rinaze, beclomethasone, syntaris, donnatal, millespas, pedriachol, etc.

FOLIC ACID IS THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE HOMOCYSTEINE REDUCER!!!
TAKE 5 - 20 MG A DAY FOR 1 MONTH. THEN GO ON MAINTENANCE DOSAGE OF 5 MG A DAY FOR LIFE.
REMEMBER THAT SAME FOODS AND DRINKS WILL RAISE THE HOMOCYSTEINE LEVEL IN SOME PEOPLE AND WILL LOWER IT IN OTHERS!!!

THE GENERAL EATING PLAN AND SUPPLEMENTS WILL LOWER HOMOCYSTEINE LEVEL IN SOME PEOPLE AND WILL NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OTHERS!!!

THE PROPOSED GENERAL EATING PLAN AND SUPPLEMENTS WILL HAVE VERY BENEFICIAL EFFECT IN SYMPATHETIC DOMINANT, SLOW OXIDISERS, PITTA AND KAPHA DOSHA DOMINANT, CHOLERIC AND SANGUINOUS TEMPERAMENT, GONADAL AND ADRENAL TYPES, PEOPLE WITHOUT A FUNGAL INFECTION.
FIND OUT WHAT IS YOUR METABOLIC TYPE BEFORE YOU ATTEMT ANY EATING PLAN AND SUPPLEMENTS. STOP FOLLOWING VARIOUS DIETS THAT DO NOT MATCH YOUR METABOLIC TYPE!!!
Try to create an awareness about the paramount importance of homocysteine take the following action:

  1. If you suspect it might be high ask your doctor to refer you for blood test. If your doctor thinks it is not important insist until he gives up. Not testing your homocysteine might mean sudden death!!!
  2. If anybody from your family or friends has a condition linked to a high homocysteine suggest a blood test
  3. If you are an employee request your company to include a homocysteine test in your annual check-up
  4. Do not accept the normal reference of 4 - 15 that appears on your blood test sheet. Any result above 6 puts you in different risk category according to the latest research!!!
The high homocsteine level can be easily corrected within 1 - 2 months following an individual eating plan and supplements that match your metabolic type. Re-test every month if the homocysteine is above 15, every 3 months if it is between 9-15 and every 6 months if it is between 6 - 9.
Consult a holistic practitioner or a doctor who has an experience with this treatment.
