Caffeine dilemma
By Dr S V Bulatov - registered homeopath

Caffeine is an anabolic xanthine alkaloid substance. It is a central nervous system and metabolism stimulant. It is the most widespread legal psychoactive drug. The roasted coffee bean contains many antioxidants as well as high levels of acrylamide (carcinogen).

Every time when caffeine is ingested it triggers various reactions in the body. The adrenaline is released. The heartbeat and blood pressure go up. This poses a risk of cardiovascular problems.

It prevents bronchial spasm and eases up asthma. It makes the person energized and alert for a few hours. It raises insulin which drops the blood sugar suddenly. It is a diuretic causing systemic dehydration that triggers more than 50 diseases. It raises also the hydrochloric acid in the stomach leading to better absorption of vitamin B12, acid reflux and ulcers. This exhausts the adrenal glands, stomach and pancreas over period of time. The caffeine interferes with the secretion of dopamine, serotonin, nor adrenaline, acetylcholine and other neurotransmitters in the brain and digestive system.

This leads to an exhaustion of the central nervous system. Sleeplessness might develop over a period of time. Caffeine increases the nitric oxide production which dilates blood vessels. Caffeine over stimulates the thyroid gland. Hypothyrodism could develop gradually and slow down the metabolism. Regular caffeine intake creates many mineral (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, zinc and copper) and vitamin (A, B1 and D) deficiencies.

This speeds up ageing. The skin loses its elasticity and becomes dry and wrinkled over a period of time. The minerals from the bones are excreted in the urine. This causes an osteoporosis. Caffeine increases the systemic acidity and might aggravate gout and tendency for kidney/gall stones. It also stimulates bile release that might be irritating in empty stomach. Caffeine has a different effect on each person according to his/metabolic type and microbiological terain.

Sympathetic dominants and fast oxidizers would be affected adversely while parasympathetic dominants and slow oxidizers would have beneficial effects. Mixed metabolic types would be having a neutral reaction.

The choleric and melancholic temperaments are aggravated by caffeine while the sanguine and phlegmatic temperaments would be ameliorated. People in anabolic state would feel worse from caffeine while people in catabolic state would feel better. Any person that has a viral, bacterial and fungal infection would be aggravated by caffeine.

The smokers that are trying to quit would have a great difficulty before giving up caffeine. Withdrawal symptoms after stopping caffeine could last 2-3 weeks. Combination of smoking, caffeine and alcohol in women on oral contraceptives increases tremendously the risk of cancer.
