Do you follow the right diet for your metabolic type?
By Dr. S.V. Bulatov - registered homeopath

There have been thousands of books written on nutrition. All of them add new and often contradictory advices. The authors are proposing their own system that is supposed to work for everyone. This is based often on a scientific research. There are many different schools of nutrition worldwide. We have an abundance of research, ideas, knowledge and eating plans. Despite that the simple question: “Which one should I follow?” is not answered. The confusion increases exponentially. Why?
The reason is that almost none of these authors provided a diagnostic tool how to analyze yourself and discover your metabolic type. Once you know your metabolic type only then you will be able to follow a diet that matches it. The results will be maintained lifetime without an effort. The long process of trial and error will be eliminated. A fine tuning process for achieving ultimate benefits will substitute it.
Everybody talks how different we are but still many people including doctors believe that the biochemical and physiological processes happen in one and the same way in the 6.6 billion people on the planet. Majority of people still think that every food has a fixed pH. The foods are classified as acid, neutral and alkaline. People are waiting for the latest book and diet to follow. Then few months later they discover that it does not work. Then something new is discovered. It is followed for a few months. Get disappointed again. Some of the people get desperate and give up on diets. Some of them devote their lives in the search for the "Holy Grail". Their metabolism gets so confused that it is difficult to analyze and restore it back to normal.
We need to understand that the knowledge in all nutritional books is invaluable. The secret is to know which part of it relates and resonates with our metabolic type. What is a metabolic type and how do we determine it?
Definition: A unique dynamic combination of anatomical, physiological, biochemical, biophysical, spiritual, mental and emotional characteristics related only to one individual.
The precise determination of one's metabolic type is possible only if:

  1. All known classifications are applied
  2. The principle of dominance factor is applied
  3. Two or three more sub - dominant factors are applied
  4. The metabolic type is dynamic and could change after balance has been achieved.
Then different classifications, dominant and sub - dominant factors should be applied. The original metabolic type could be changed by: emotional or physical trauma, coma, severe chronic disease, poisoning, operation, parasites, allergies, food intolerance, blood transfusions, transplants, strong medication, the pill, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, recreational drugs, smoking, excessive drinking, etc. Different people will have different number of layers before the original metabolic type is revealed. Very few people (5 - 10 %) will have their original metabolic type unchanged throughout their life.
I have put together a dynamic diagnostic constitutional classification that is based on all classifications used since 6 000 years ago. There is nothing new. The synthesis between all of them gives us a complete mosaic of human race. The moment the mosaic is applied the metabolic type transpires automatically. A new assessment might be necessary 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks or 12 weeks later.
The following classification systems are used:
  1. Ayurvedic: 3 doshas and their 10 combinations, prakruti, herbs, foods
  2. Chinese: 5 elements, zang and fu organs, yin and yang, classical meridians, Dr Voll meridians, deficiency and excess, herbs, foods
  3. Greco - Arabic: 4 temperaments, mizaj, herbs, foods and their qualities and nature, the temperament of diseases, cupping
  4. Endo-, meso- and ectomorphic types and sub-types
  5. Louis Kuhne head and neck shapes, front, side and back deposits, abdominal and sitz baths
  6. 20 chemical types and sub-types of Victor G Rocine
  7. 2 000 types in homeopathic Materia Medica
  8. 38 types of Dr Bach
  9. Dr Deck iridogenotypes: lymphatic, hematogenic and mixed, dispositions, bioiridotherapy
  10. Dr Wolcott metabolic types: 9 fundamental homeostatic control mechanisms: autonomic dominant: carbo, protein and mixed types; Dr Kelley's 10 sub-types; Dr Watson carbo-oxidative dominant types: fast, mixed and slow oxidizer; anabolic/catabolic dominant; electrolyte deficiency/excess; Dr Abravanel endocrine types: gonadal, adrenal, thyroid and pituitary; Dr D’Adamo blood types: O, A, B and AB, Rhesus factor, secretor status;
  11. 2 eye-body patterns: contracted and extended.
  12. Dr Kelley's autonomic dominant types: carbo, protein and mixed types and 10 sub-types
  13. Dr Watson's carbo-oxidative dominant types: fast, slow and mixed oxidizer
  14. Dr Revici’s anabolic/catabolic dominant types
  15. Electrolyte deficiency/excess types
  16. Dr Abravanel's endocrine types: gonadal, adrenal, thyroid and pituitary
  17. Dr D'Adamo blood types: O, A, B and AB, Rhesus factor, secretor status
  18. Dr Reams biological theory of ionization (RBTI): achieving the perfect equation
  19. Dr Enderlein’s microbiological terrain: active viral/bacterial/fungal/parasitic infection
  20. Enemies to health
When this mosaic is used there is one dominant and 2-3 sub-dominant classifications that are applied at the time of the consultation. Majority of the information comes from a very detailed questionnaire and physical examination although some tests might be necessary additionally. Once the metabolic type is determined there is an eating plan that matches it. The fine tuning process is done through the sub-dominant classifications and following the diet over two weeks. The fine tuning includes: adjusting the proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, adjusting the quantity, determining the number of meals and snacks and intervals between them, observing the energy levels, attention, memory and concentration, appetite, cravings, performance, endurance, blood sugar, sleep, immunity, etc. This is a dynamic process that might take few weeks to few months. It is very rewarding because you are feeling progressively better. There are a few options in this process:

  1. The different layers are changing until the original metabolic type is revealed few weeks or months later.
  2. The original metabolic type is obvious at the first consultation and remains the same few months or years later.
  3. As the balance is achieved something happens that changes the original metabolic type or adds a completely new layer. This mosaic equips anybody with a very precise knowledge how to determine the metabolic type. This could be done through a self-analysis or visiting a holistic health practitioner. The mosaic could be studied by anyone. The important thing is that the student should have a good knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, diseases, etc. This is important in order to discern between the general and metabolic typing diets. The person should have an interest in nutrition and an intention to practice the metabolic typing diets later. If the person is already a holistic health practitioner it will be a great asset to his practice. The process of understanding the metabolic typing takes time because we are conditioned to believe that some foods are good and some are bad, the foods have an absolute pH value, fats are bad, low fat is good, vegetarianism is better than meat eating, meat eating is better than vegetarianism, fish and chicken are better than red meat, margarine and cold pressed oils are better than butter, wheat is bad for everyone, dairy produce mucus in everyone, sugar is bad for everyone, eating eggs increases cholesterol, chromium regulates sugar metabolism, calcium and magnesium should be taken together, calcium prevents osteoporosis, magnesium prevents osteoporosis, potassium and magnesium prevent muscle cramps, etc. The interesting fact is that all these statements are absolutely correct when related to the metabolic type. This automatically takes away the confusion and unnecessary arguments between different schools of nutrition. The wisdom lies in understanding of the metabolic type and matching it with an eating plan as a rock solid foundation for a permanent healing and balance.
