This is a genetic condition caused by a defect of several enzymes needed for the synthesis of heme - the building block of hemoglobin that delivers oxygen to the cells and cytochrome P450 oxidases that detoxify the body. Heme is involved in other important functions as well. Increased levels of circulating kryptopyrrols bind with zinc and vitamin B6. This causes a severe zinc and vitamin B6 deficiency. Zinc is a co-factor in more than 200 enzymes in the body. Vitamin B6 is involved in production of neurotransmitters in the brain. They also suffer from low glutathione level that slows detoxification.
